President’s Message
Got Crime? Not in our city!
arbor Beach, as well as all of us who live here in South Beach Fort
Lauderdale, wish to congratulate Chief Rick Maglione and the entire Fort
H Lauderdale Police Department on their record-breaking 2018 crime statistics.
Inside, Chief Rick Maglione speaks to FLPD's success and methods implemented to
achieve this tremendous accomplishment. Chief Maglione shares with us that earlier
this year he had somewhat optimistically predicted a lower than average crime rate
for 2018, but the final numbers had not yet come in to confirm his gut feeling.
Fast forward to today. Those numbers have come in and the Chief was right on target
in confirming the lowest crime rate our city has enjoyed since the 1970's! Thank you,
Chief, for your leadership and a job well done!
We here in HB easily recognize our own very important contribution to the FLPD's
outstanding 2018 performance via our Harbor Beach Security, aka HBI detail, whose
officers keep a keen and watchful eye over our neighborhood and loved ones. Earlier
Annette Ross this year, we were fortunate when our own Officer Sandi Downs-Keesling committed
President
to take control of our detail from veteran Captain Dave Wheeler and continues to staff
and run it today. Officer Downs-Keesling very likely knows our neighbors and
Harbor Beach Property neighborhood better than her own as she is an early morning fixture patrolling our
Homeowners Association, Inc.
1322 SE 17th Street neighborhood nearly every single day. We are grateful for her service and dedication

Who are the Fort Lauderdale Police Officers that make up our HBI Security Detail?
HBI is extremely fortunate to employ a diverse mix of Officers with varied positions
within the Department including one Captain, three Sergeants, four Detectives,
BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Homeless Outreach, Cyber Security, Motorman and K-9 unit.

neighborhood today? Reduction in the funding of HBI Security due the loss of faithful
Pat Riley and unfailing support from long-time members who have either passed away,

downsized or moved out of the city. These vacant older homes are often demolished
Barry Somerstein and morph into construction sites that offer a magnet for unscrupulous people casing

the neighborhood for future burglary and theft. With a reduction in resources
Isobel Sturgeon necessitating a loss of coverage, we expose ourselves and our families to exactly such
IsobelS@harborbeach.org a threat and others.
Steve Tsingas Another very visible threat to our safety and security is our State's present policy of

allowing unrestricted anchoring in Sylvan Lake, which amplifies the call to fully fund
HBI. I know many hold no fond memories of the derelict sailboat that broke free of its
Rupp Associates, Accounting anchor, blew into our power lines and plunged us into darkness...twice. The good

rupp1040@aol.com news is that our Rep. Chip LaMarca fully agrees with us and has committed to help us
navigate toward better regulation of the anchoring in Sylvan Lake. We are very
grateful to him and look forward to joining forces in the fight!
South Ocean Bridge replacement project continues its forward motion with the city in
the depths of traffic analysis re the implications of time and budget in keeping one
lane open during its upcoming construction. We all must be patient as it progresses.
